JoeG
The University I'm attending is quite a long distance from home, around 380 miles. This means I'm going to have to stay in a dorm. So, do any of you have any tips or advice for staying in dorms? I know there are books on this kind of thing, but it's nice to hear advice from people, and to bring it to the attention of people who may not have thought of this topic before. ZiggyM
Well I'm not at uni yet - but this year I've been boarding on Campus at school (Basically to make time for IB!) A few things I could say - If people ask to borrow things - keep track of them because no matter how well meaning they are, they will forget to return it! - Benefit from studying in groups - you're there - so use the resource! This goes in general for studying (at uni as well I have heard) because you will get less one on one time with teachers (depending) so you need to bounce ideas off each other! - Don't seclude yourself! As someone said above - get to know people and make some good friends! You're going to need them if things get tough - especially since you're away from home. - But don't get too distracted Time management is key (which hopefully you have learnt from IB!) get your work and assignments done early when you get them - then you will have time to party and have fun There's a few - not particularly useful but anywho 1 Reply
iber2011
What i heard was that the first year in uni is always easy like they just teach you everything what you took in 12th but just a little bit advanced....so you don't really need to worry about that butdon't not study because you might think that yeah i know this...but you won't...so don't be overconfident! And about roommates...don't share everything about yourself...try to know how they are first...don't trust anyone very quickly...and make one close friend who knows the places around which you don't know and make sure he/she is smart lol so that you can ask him/her doubt whenever you need!! Lol! That's what im gonna do haha! Reply
Sandwich
People will steal your things from the fridge. SO! Train yourself to eat stuff nobody else likes. Skimmed milk and so on. Or devise a system of concealing things. Do NOT label things with your name in marker pen as this is exceptionally uncool and will probably mark your things out for destruction. Also bring some stuff to share Win people to you with a box of beer or a box of chocolates. As others have said, make the most of being around other people and prioritise socialising to some extent. First year may or may not be a repeat of school (depends which course you're doing and which country you're in as to whether they expect you to already be to that standard or not) but it's always the easiest year. So make the most of it! Join societies and establish a group of people you're good friends with - that's really the most important thing to get out of 1st year, aside from trying to get decent grades xP There'll be total arses and then some lovely people on your corridor/in whichever space, and at the beginning the main challenge is working out who is which Takes a while, but really establishing good relationships will help you feel good about where you are, despite the initial scaryness of being away from home and the familiar and ultimately feeling positive and good about yourself and where you are is going to help you succeed with your grades too. 1 Reply
