Anyone considering NOT going to university and doing something different after IB?

I'm probably going straight to Uni but I would love to have had an opportunity to serve in the army for a year British, French or Swedish.

In Switzerland, fit male nationals over 18 are still obliged to do 18 or 21 weeks of basic military service, which can be divided up in various ways.

Unfortunately the army timetable for the basic training camps for recruits and officers is not compatible with the academic calendar of Swiss universities. As a result, the EPFL recommends that students take one year off after school in order to complete the entire basic training course before starting their bachelor studies. They can also use the time to take some review classes.

I am not really going to any university. Yeah you got it right, No school and university after IB.

At least for now.

referring to this :

no what i meant was... Why not take easier courses, if you don't want to go to university.

- Well Honestly, as insane as this may sound but I initially and primarily took IB Diploma programme because of the various subject choices.

I just wanted to experiment. I experiment with almost everything single thing.

And no, I am not a certificate student... I am actually aiming for the diploma :)

I am going to take a gap, and if I feel the need to enhance my skills in some particular section - I will take the required course for it.

I am aiming to get into internships directly and assist film directors and people in advertising media.

Doesnt mean that I hate education, (well I hate math though) but the point is I do not want to waste my time on something that i not necessarily consider my top-most priority at the moment.

I like to go with the wind....where my opportunity and preparation takes me...

Perhaps Luck is when your opportunity meets preparation, isn't it? :)

  • 5 weeks later...

Well, me and two friends from my IB class are gonna take a gap year and walk from north-west Spain (where we live) to Istanbul, in Turkey. We are saving for it, but we expect we won't spend a lot of money. Then, if we can afford it, we'll take a plane from Istambul to Kathmandu, Nepal. Then, we'd love walking to Lhasa, Tibet (China), a really important Buddhist spot.

It may sound dreamy, but we've been planning for a long time and it's not as crazy as it looks like.

Several students from our school have continued their studies at institutes that are not always classified as universities, although some of them may have similar standing. For example:

EI School of Professional Make-Up, Los Angeles

HEC, St. Gallen and Geneva

Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne

Ecole de multimédia et d'art de Fribourg

Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL)

Centre Doret, Vevey

Theatre Studies in Geneva

Geneva Design School

Les Roches Hotel School in Sierre

HEC, St. Gallen and Geneva

IPGL - L'Ecole supérieure en éducation de l'enfance, Lausanne

Haute Ecole de la Santé La Source, Lausanne

Glion Hotel School

St. Martin's College of Art, London

Europes Economische Hogeschool, Bruxelles

I will definetly be going to university after highschool (If I get accepted to any that is.. :P)

But if things don't turn out that way, I would probably resume my training in the armed forces. Mostlikely in the Navy.

or travel around Asia! Now that would be awesome. Experience different cultures, foods, languages and everything!

And if ALL that doesn't happen.... there's always that garbage lady option...or a stripper. :argh:

Okay nevermind, scratch that last part.

Since I enjoyed learning to fly with a UAS, I at one time considered joining the RAF. But I'm glad I didn't! Life in the services can be very restrictive indeed, and although you can travel a lot, you may have little opportunity for sightseeing.

Better to pursue a career in civilian life, and then use part of your earnings to explore the world in complete freedom!

I'm sorry, I'm not very familiar with the terms UAS and RAF. Do you mean the Air forces?

Yes that is true, but at the same time I wouldn't mind serving my country :)

Now that I think about it, you are absolutely right! If I wanted to go travelling, I would have to save up some money first... But to be honest, by travelling, I think I forgot to mention missionary work. That is what I really meant. :D

Thanks for your imput though!

Sorry about the abbreviations. Yes, RAF is the Royal Air Force, and UAS is University Air Squadron. Basically in a UAS you have the rank of Officer Cadet Pilot, learn to fly in what time you can spare from your university studies, have a whole lot of fun, and even get paid for it!

I admire your noble aims in serving your country and doing missionary work. Bravo!

I admire my teacher, who told me he was working various low-paying jobs since he was 18 for 7 years and there he realized he never wanted to do manual work again. When he was 25, he went to uni and there he found out, that studying there is actually easier than working and that it was full of "not so bad looking women". I respect him very much. Now that he has left back to New Zealand, i'm going to write to him and ask if there is a job i could do there for about 6 months. If not, i'm going to Copenhagen. Basically, i want to take a gap year and return in May next year. Then i would like to go to Uni, but to which I haven't yet decided.

Between leaving school and starting at university I worked for a few months as a lumberjack. The trees were not huge, and we felled them manually with axes and carried the trunks out of the forest on our shoulders. So I agree with your teacher that studying is a *lot* easier than "working"!

Ahh that makes much more sense now!
