Behind-the-scenes look at Season 5, Part 2 of 'Yellowstone'
The show's official YouTube channel posted a behind-the-scenes look at how cast and crew prepared for Season 5.Why did Kevin Costner leave 'Yellowstone'?
"I just wanted to let you know that I won't be returning," Costner said in a video posted on his Instagram and social media pages the same day the Paramount Network announced a Nov. 10 premiere date for the final "Yellowstone" episodes.

In an interview the day following his viral video release, Costner told USA TODAY that he was tired of holding out hope for a "Yellowstone" return when asked about the series during his extended media tour promoting his Western film series Horizon.

Media inquiries about John Dutton's return were the "overwhelming question that would occur in almost every interview," said Costner.

"Simply with all the questions that were being asked (about 'Yellowstone'), the longer I thought about that ... I just wanted to say that this is a stepping-off point," said Costner. "Whatever I'd hoped for maybe was not in the cards. I don't want to keep saying, 'Yeah, I hope I can do it.' That's drifted to a place that I don't think is realistic anymore."

Costner said there was not a specific act in his return talks with Paramount Studios and executive producer Taylor Sheridan to spark the impromptu video. He didn't want to hold out for optimism that wasn't there.

"I just wanted to get that done," Costner said of making the video. "I'm not a machine trying to figure this out. But I'm not a person that leaves people high and dry."

Yellowstone, the most-watched broadcast TV series of its time, has gripped a national audience with its epic Western themes, soapy family drama, and an eager willingness to go to extremes.

For generations, the Dutton clan has built Yellowstone into the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, and they'll do anything to protect it — up to (and including) murder. The power struggles over the family’s land have powered the show through years of shocking plot twists, featuring John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children, Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Jamie (Wes Bentley).

But fans have been left hanging during an extended mid-season break. Paramount announced in November 2023 that the show will conclude with season 5, which is halfway complete; the remaining six episodes resume on Nov. 10, with the series finale set for Dec. 15.

Fortunately, showrunner Taylor Sheridan has more stories planned, including a new spinoff set in 1944. The saga will also continue in a present-day sequel series called The Madison (formerly titled 2024), starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, and Elle Chapman.

Here's everything you need to know about the Yellowstone cast.Kevin Costner, who plays patriarch John Dutton, joined the show thinking that it would be a single 10-episode series, but Yellowstone's popularity has kept him on the ranch for five seasons (and also won him a Golden Globe in 2023).

Costner has been an A-list star since the late-'80s, headlining a string of hits including The Untouchables (1987), Bull Durham (1988), Field of Dreams (1989), The Bodyguard (1992), and Dances With Wolves (1990), the latter of which earned him Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

Yellowstone continues Costner's long-time interest in life in the West. "I don't think of it as a modern Western, I think of it as modern-day ranching," he told EW in 2019. "The themes out in the country will always be a draw to me. It's not 'Here he goes again.' That area of our country is still alive [and] contemporary."

For the past several years, Costner has been working on his own Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga. The story — which takes place around the time of the American Civil War — will be split into multiple films, with Chapter 1 released in June 2024, the second awaiting a new release date, and a third in production. A fourth film is currently in development.

Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts between Yellowstone and Horizon created friction, leading to Costner's premature exit from the series in 2023 ahead of season 5B (though his character's presence remains pivotal to the remaining six episodes, as shown in the trailer).

Costner has seven children from several relationships. From his first marriage to Cindy Silva, he has three children named Joe, Lily, and Annie. He also has a son, Liam, with Bridget Rooney. His second marriage to Baumgartner brought about three more children: sons Cayden Wyatt and Hayes Logan, and daughter Grace Avery.Brecken Merrill was 8 years old when he was cast as Kayce and Monica's son, Tate. Merrill had appeared in two episodes of This Is Us before landing this role, but he credits Yellowstone with awakening his desire to pursue acting as a career.

In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Merrill recalled shooting a scene with his character's grandfather, John, out on location in the bitter cold. "Kevin says, 'Do you really, like, wanna do this? Is this what you really wanna do?' I thought about it for the next month, and he kind of guided me to that area of, yeah, this is what I wanna do,” Merrill said. “This is my career. This is my passion. It's super cold. It's zero degrees, but I'm loving it."

"People have seen that I've grown up and that I'm really taking acting seriously,” he continued. “I think Taylor is gonna recognize that, too, and he's going to write more grown-up scenes for me."

Merrill will star in the upcoming film We All Got Up to Dance, which takes place during the period of the Vietnam Wa
