MBDIS07
Hi, I'm in Myp5 and soon I have to choose subjects, but I don't know if they are good enough to get into a good university. My school does not offer many courses but I would do this: IT LIT HL (Mother language), BM HL, MATH aa SL, DESIGN SL (not offered high), ENG LIT AND LANG SL. And I don't know what to put as third high, between HISTORY, PSYCHOLOGY or put English high and history or psychology SL Reply
Corbin
Hello, champ, If English isn't your mother language then I wouldn't choose it as your HL. I've heard from a friend that psychology HL does not allow for gaining a lot of credits. I'm in History HL currently and I will say it's one of my hardest courses so far but out of the three that would be my recommendation. Reply

I actually would take it HL because it shows that you are willing to take on a challenge! :))))))) Reply
NOTteaganfarrel
Hey bud. I would consider not going near history with a 5 foot long pole, unless you can write. IB English will show your dedication to learning other tongues. Reply

Now, I actually know how to right, and I have a really high average in history, I'm passing right now with an A+. As for English, I wouldn't really know, also because HL has 5 hours so it would be easier, and I would have more time, but at the same time I would have double the work, especially on Macbeth and Shakespeare. If instead, I would add French B SL instead of history? Reply

I will say that here in the states it's not a class based on knowledge of historical events but more about learning how to answer the questions on the finals. Also, I just finished my history IA and it was pretty terrible, mine ended up being something like 11 pages total. I am currently in English A Lit HL and at least in our class, it is heavily based on reading and analyzing texts as well as writing a ton of essays. I really enjoy that class and I would say that it is fairly easy compared to the rest of my courses. There is very little time with IB in general lol. If it was me I would take English SL and History HL but I don't know what your level in French is. Personally, I'm really bad at language learning so I took the easiest language course available to me but it is all up to you and your confidence in each subject. The HLs here don't only just make the course harder with more to learn but also cause you to take more exams on them so in general I would put my best subjects as my HLs. If English isn't your mother language, it's not a big deal at all. Disregarding that you can develop your English a lot in the IB, it isn't that hard to get sixes, as long as you follow the formula. Can't speak for Psych but agree that History HL can be very hard, so I wouldn't choose that as a "might as well" HL subject. Reply

My writing quality (grammar and such) is much better In English than in Finnish, but then again, Finnish grammar is difficult or at least very extensive. In speech too, I often refer to English words when the Finnish ones escape me. All of this is to say that it depends on your level. If you are at least moderately confident with your English, English HL could suit you. Reply
