UPOI
Hi everyone, Just recently, my question "To what extent did the principles of various philosophes influence the ideologies of Robespierre during the French Revolution? just got somewhat approved by the teacher. I originally wanted to focus on just Rousseau and argue that although Robespierre did draw inspiration from Rousseau, he was also influenced by other Enlightenment philosophers such as Voltaire and Montesquieu. However, the teacher said that I might be limiting myself by phrasing the question such as "To what extent was Robespierre's political and social ideologies influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau?". He is also worried the number of sources might be less than the standard amount. I just wanted a second opinion as I feel that the one suggested by the teacher is inversely too broad for a History IA. Thank you so much to anyone who replies ^.^ Reply
IB_taking_over
Is Nov. 2016 old or new syllabus? (If it's new, I am not nearly as certain on the size of scope that creates depth part.)I'm not a fan of going against the teacher. (Although I've never had a problem where their conclusion/suggestion doesn't work out.) They are paid to know how to do this IB stuff. Your teacher is right, "To what extent was Robespierre's political and social ideologies influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau?" is more limited than To what extent did the principles of various philosophes influence the ideologies of Robespierre during the French Revolution?. Question #1 (limited one) seems more fit given the shortness of the IA. However, the question lacks a direction. It needs a place in which Robespierre's ideologies can exist. (The French Revolution, as suggested by your teacher, would work well.)1500-2000 words is not very many when you are trying to prove something. If your teacher's biggest concern is sources, just make sure you can find the minimum amount before embarking on your research. (It would suck to get some of it done only to have to start over because you can't find enough sources.) ~IB_taking_over 1 Reply
UPOI
Great so I have nothing to worry about...Thank you very much. I wasn't asking for a second opinion for the sake of 'going against' my teacher, it's just that his reputation isn't the best when it comes to giving advice so I thought I might give IB Survival a go. Oh and yea it's the old syllabus. Anyways, thanks and good luck in your exams! Edited February 25, 2016 by UPOI 1 Reply
