  1. Since this is an antilog equation, my teacher said that propagating concentration uncertainties from pH is beyond the scope of IB Chemistry syllabus so I would have to do another way. He said that I should " calculate half the range of the pH values for each variation." What does this mean???? For context, let's say my pH is 2.13 +/- 0.05 and my H+ concentration is 7.41E-3. How would I get the uncertainty of it? thank you so much 🙂
  2. I was planning to do my HL chemistry database IA on the relationship between corrosion rate and pH level such as the difference between corrosion rate of steel when reacted with ocean water and rain water, but my teacher told me it is too simple and the answer is obvious. Are there any other factors I can or should add to my paper to make it complex enough? Or should I change my topic completely?
  3. Hi, I'm performing an experiment on the pKin of hibiscus indicators. From what I know, the major anthocyanin in Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is cyanidin-3-sophoroside. I would like to know the major anthocyanin in Hibiscus brackenridgei. In short, what is the major anthocyanin in Hibiscus brackenridgei? Thank you in advance!
  4. Hi, I'd like an opinion on two ideas I have for a Chemistry Extended Essay: "How does the Kc of a hibiscus indicator change with temperature?" and "At what pH values do red, yellow and white hibiscus indicators change colours? What kind of titrations can they be used for?" I'd like to know which of these topics would be simpler (I need to do a lot of reading and learning either way) and which one sounds original. I personally prefer the second one as I think its results will be more useful for real-world applications but I think I feel like its already been done. Thanks in advan
  5. Hi, I've been thinking about my Chemistry EE and came up with an idea, but need some opinions or suggestions on it: "How does the Kc of an indicator made from hibiscus (called Kind) change with temperature?" Another idea I had was "For what type of titration are hibiscus indicators the most effective: strong acid-strong base, weak acid-weak base, strong acid-weak base or weak acid-strong-base?". I'd like some thoughts on the above ideas. Thanks in advance!
  6. What I'm planning to do is test the effect of pH on algae growth, but I'm not sure how I'd manipulate the pH (should I use HCl or something?) or how to make algal media (is it sugar, sea water, and plant fertilizer?). Thanks for all your help!
  7. If I use the product "pH Up and Down" 1 in my EE to change the pH of water, will this be viewed negatively by IB graders? Are they looking for students to manually alter pHs (eg through adding sulfur to lower pH)? 1: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hydroponics-Organic-pH-Testing-and-Adjusting-Kit-VPTK4/202985176?MERCH=REC-_-nosearch2_rr-_-NA-_-202985176-_-N
  8. Hi. I am doing my first IA but I am having lots of difficulties..... My research question is How do different levels of pH (level 2 and 9) affect the activity of amylase?. However, my school is not providing amylase so what is the easiest way to get amylase for the experiment? and how do I have to write variables and personal engagement?
  9. I want to do my IA on how pH affects the rate of a reaction, and ideas on what reaction i could use where i could easily change the pH. Also how would i change the pH?
  10. So for our design lab, our teacher has been telling us to do something about "factors that affect photosynthesis" (if I'm not mistaken, we don't have a sheet or anything yet, she just gave us a really quick heads up.) So I was thinking of manipulating the wavelenghts of light using coloured plastic. I'll have a plant and a small beaker of water underneath a bell jar, or overturned beaker, with the plastic covering it. After a while I'll be measuring the the pH change of the water, to see if it's more acidic or basic by then, and tie it back to how much CO2 was used / O2 was released. I'm not s
  11. I've been on this problem for hours now, and I really need some help. "Acetic acid, CH3CO2H, is the solute that gives vinegar its characteristic odor and sour taste. Calculate the pH and the concentrations of all species present (H30+, CH3CO2-, CH3CO2H, and OH-) in 1.00M CH3CO2H."
  12. Guys, please help me! pH range of HCl? is it (-1 to 1) (0 to 1)? pH range of NaOH? is it (12-14) (13-14)? if you have a site to refer to please do share as well! Thanks in advance!
  13. Read the other comment for my question... Actually, I have an idea. Would there be a possibility to measure pH of a series of, say, alcohols? Or should I find something else?
  14. Hey guys! Do you think it is a good idea to write about the acidity in fruits for my extended essay? I was thinking like: How does the pH level change depending on the ripening of apples compared to bananas? I am not very good at formulating research questions (as you can see) lol.. but is the idea okay? Thanks in advance!
  15. I am now starting to think about what subject and area and topic to do for my extended essay and I have around 9 months to finish it. (Thats really not a lot of time) I actually wanted to do my EE in Biology as it is my best and most interested subject. However, my teacher is always persuading me not to choose Bio cause it is hard to get a good grade for EE. Anyways, I am actually having some idea on observation and investigating on plants growth. Two direction now I think, though they are really broad and are only an idea right now. 1. Investigate how low concentration pH helps reduce the eff
  16. Can I increase the pH by adding water (diluting it) For my IA, I am going to use pepsi. The pH of pepsi is 3. How can I increase the pH? Our blood pH is 7ish. I have to somehow take it to there. Thank you. Chemistry SL
