Hi! I'm currently taking HL Math AA, HL Physics, HL Philosophy, SL Chemistry, SL English A Literature, and SL French B and I'm looking to apply to T10 US schools (Brown, Princeton, Yale, etc.). I'm thinking of switching from SL Chemistry to SL Theatre, but I'm concerned that this will affect my chances at being admitted into a Top US university, because Theatre may be seen as an easier course in their eyes. Would this have an effect on my chances, with all else being the same?

Hello there, I am currently struggling a bit. In only a few weeks time I will have to hand in the formula, with my chosen subjects for the IB. But the thing is, that I am really indecisive. The subjects don’t really interest me as much, and I am fairly neutral. And I don’t have the slightest idea on what I would study in university or if I would even want to study abroad. But what I do know is, that I couldn’t see myself going for a scientific of medical profession ever in this life. I was thinking about choosing these following subjects: HL: German, English,Geography SL: Mathe

Hey guys, I recently started planning out my chemistry SL IA. I was thinking of using different materials and analyzing how they affect the calorimeter. I was thinking of linking this to the thermodynamics module. I was thinking for example of using styrofoam cups, metal, plastic. Do you think this would be a viable analysis, as I'm wondering if there really is something to analyze here... thanks a lot, Cyril

Hello, I have a question about changing IB subject.. Have any of you changed your IB subjects? What did you do, to whom did you go? Is it possible to change your IB subject during first day of school (lol)?

Hi Im considering taking Chemistry as a subject in IB because I am yet to start school but I am not too sure about it as I did not take Chemistry as a subject for my IGCSE/GCSE. I wonder what you guys think about this and it would be really helpful if i could have a general comparison of chemistry as a subject in IB and IGCSE Thanks a lot

So I have to do a theoretical IA in chemistry since I kind of screwed up with my practical one... I am in chemistry SL and this is a kind of hard situation for me as I don't really have any idea what I want to write about and the full draft is due 27 August 2017. My teacher gave me some sources in the form of databases but to be true I am not that good in chemistry. I take chemistry SL which may save me. Anyway if anyone did a theoretical IA in chemistry I would be very grateful for any tips.

Hi, I'm supposed to come up with a rough proposal of the chem IA. I've thought some and as I need to connect this to myself, I tried to something Korean. So I thought of measuring Vitamin C content in kimchi and its change according to the storage period of kimchi, and I'm not sure if this suits an SL IA. I also haven't learned oxidation and redox things yet, so would it be hard for me to do this without any pre knowledge? Thank you for your help

Hey guys, I am an IB student thats taking his IB finals in May of 2018. My chemistry IA is coming up after this summer, and I am thinking about doing one on air pollution and the formation of air pollution. My chemistry teacher told me that it won't be practical, and that it is pretty hard to do. What are some ways that I can extend on this idea, or, how can I adopt this idea to another idea? Thanks!

Hey guys so long story short I decided to hold off my IA until the final week, and I need to complete my experiment basically in the next 3 days or so. My teacher gave me a pH metre, so I'm thinking about doing experiments that involve measuring the pH. My initial idea was testing how the temperature of a solution affected its pH, but my teacher said it was too simple as temperature simply changed the kA. Basically what I'm asking is does anyone have any easy topics for a chem sl IA that involve a pH metre, as well as simple household chemicals(not sulfuric acid or anything lol)

Hi, I was just wondering if I could get some input (or mere approval from current/former IB students) about my chemistry IA research question. Is this a common lab idea? I haven't really seen it anywhere so I'm not sure but I would like to make mine unique. Is it a realistic experiment to conduct within 10 hours? "How does cooking time affect the vitamin C content in various vegetables?"

Hi guys, I know we have had separate discussion rooms for Chemistry, but I thought we can talk about Paper 3 specifically here :). How's everyone Paper 3?

Honestly, I spent all day studying and I have mid term tomorrow (predicted grade for uni) and I really can't do Stoichiometry. Every time I think I get it, I don't at all. And its throughout the whole entire course I'm really at math, can you guys offer any tips?

Hei. I need desperate help with this Redox Titration lab calculations. I suck at chemistry, I go for extra help and read text book and only understand for one day, and then I'm confused the next. Anyways, we had to experimentally determine the % H2O2 by mass in a solution given: MnO4 + H2O2 + H -> Mn + O2 + H2O (charges are given). Procedure: Combine (in order) 25 drops of H2O2 solution, 20.0 mL of deionozed water, and 20.0mL of 1.00 M +/- 0.05 M H2SO4 in an Erlenmeyer flask. Titrate with 0.0400 +/- 0.0005 M KMnO4 until solution decolorizes to a persistent pink. Raw Data: Mass

Hei guys. So today, my chem teacher announced that we need to pass in 3 IA proposals by Friday. I'm so stumped. I suck at chemistry. Its interesting, but so complex for my wee-little brain. I need ideas or at least a guide. I don't want anything too difficult (obviously). I did pretty good on the Acid & Bases unit, and also RedOx unit. Others were pretty sucky. Or, do you know any websites that may have a list of topics? Thanks!

Hei. So I'm have trouble calculating the % yield for NH3 of: N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3 I know that you're supposed to find the limiting reagent, which is N2, and I know for sure that I got that right. The masses given for each molecule is 400 kg (N2), 200kg (2H2), and 220kg (2NH3). I know that you're supposed to do the (molar mass of NH3)/(220)) x 100, but I'm not getting the right answer. What am I doing wrong? The correct answer is 45.2%

Hello, I am taking the Chemistry SL finals in less than two weeks and I ran into a odd question. This is the question: Draw an annotated diagram of a voltaic cell composed of a magnesium electrode in 1.0 mol dm–3 magnesium nitrate solution and a silver electrode in 1.0 mol dm–3 silver nitrate solution. State the direction of electron flow on your diagram. This is a paper two question and no reactivity series was provided. From the Databooklet, what diagram/chart/table can I use to figure out that magnesium is the stronger reducing agent compared to silver and hence undergoes oxidation

I recently conducted my IA lab over rate of reaction. It was a simple lab where I measured the rate of an antacid tablet in HCl at different temperatures and different surface areas. My teacher is unfortunately not very helpful in the organizational aspect, and I was wondering if someone could provide a simple outline for how the final IA should be set up. Thanks a million!

Hello everybody! I know the question is straight forward, but I think it is useful for y'all to know about my chemistry background. In my school, chemistry SL is done in one year meaning that we have been high-tailing on the fast lane, leaving the strugglers behind, and really grinding through the syllabus. So yeah, I have studied the core already but I feel like I have forgotten everything that we did in the beginning of the year because of the galore of information we are getting bombarded at. Also, we are on the verge of studying the options right now ( medicines and drugs, environmental

I've been trying to think of an IA I could do on voltaic cells for my Chem SL class and I'm having a hard time finding many variables I could manipulate. I know that I can change the metals and reactions will/won't occur based on the activity series, but that's about all I've actually learned in class. I've tried googling around, seeing if concentration/temperature/salt bridge/etc. will affect the reactions, but I can't find anything that isn't insanely difficult for me to understand (chemistry isn't my strong suit haha). I've asked my teacher about it and he just says, "I don't know if anythi
