I was planning to do my HL chemistry database IA on the relationship between corrosion rate and pH level such as the difference between corrosion rate of steel when reacted with ocean water and rain water, but my teacher told me it is too simple and the answer is obvious. Are there any other factors I can or should add to my paper to make it complex enough? Or should I change my topic completely?
  2. I-(aq) + HSO4-(aq) -> I2(aq) + SO2(g) How do you solve this? I just learned this, but if they are both - charge on the left, how can one be oxidized and the other reduced if they are both 0 oxidation states on the right? WHAT AM I MISSING? They should be 0 on both sides right.. can someone solve this and explain it? I don't really get it. tHANKS
  3. Hi, this question was from a past paper, and I got stuck between choosing C or D, I know the electrode potential (E) should be greater than 0. But what i am stuck with is which one is better reducing agent/ oxidising agent, because it doesn't seem like a fair comparison. Usually we would be comparing between Fe3+ and Br-; and then Fe2+ and Br2. Not the mixture of them together. How to approach these questions? P.S. The answer to this question is D Any help would be greatly appreciated
  4. Hei. I need desperate help with this Redox Titration lab calculations. I suck at chemistry, I go for extra help and read text book and only understand for one day, and then I'm confused the next. Anyways, we had to experimentally determine the % H2O2 by mass in a solution given: MnO4 + H2O2 + H -> Mn + O2 + H2O (charges are given). Procedure: Combine (in order) 25 drops of H2O2 solution, 20.0 mL of deionozed water, and 20.0mL of 1.00 M +/- 0.05 M H2SO4 in an Erlenmeyer flask. Titrate with 0.0400 +/- 0.0005 M KMnO4 until solution decolorizes to a persistent pink. Raw Data: Mass
  5. Hey all, I have to come up with a design (experiment) for chemistry, related to galvanic cells/voiltaic cells. This is one of our last labs and Id really appreciate if someone could help me:/ considering I have done poorly in all my other labs . Could anyone suggest an Idea for a design; i have no idea what to do it would laos be nice if someone could look over my work once its done perhaps? the specific assignment is: Design an experiment investigating a factor that affects voltaic cells (galvanic cells)...   6. Hello my fellow IBers, I need help coming up with a topic for my redox design lab. I was thinking of using a voltaic cell, however ideas for electrolytic cells are also more than welcomed. By the way, I don't want to vary the concentration of the solutions because I heard that doesn't produce much change in voltage. Thanks in advance

    This is a powerpoint with notes and problems associated with IB electrochemistry (redox). There is some extra information about balancing redox equations when they are not in acid media - this is not in the IB syllabus but is just good to know for university next year!
  8. so, i want to do the design internal assessment with redox as my topic, but i am not sure if i'm doing it right... the idea is to heat up dry cell with heat plate. i am trying to investigate the difference in voltage my question is: 1. will it count as redox experiment and not kinetics experiment? 2. will it be safe? and if it is do you have any suggestion to improve? thanks for help
  9. Hello everyone! first post here on the forums. I've been having issues lately with my EE, and thus I have needed to change topic a little bit. I wanted some feedback on whether my topic is perhaps too broad or too narrow to cover in the nearly 4000 word essay.
