Hi guys, I wanted to ask what are the possible ideas for Biology group for G4P if the main topic is fast food? I know that's a pretty vast one and it seems that Biology can do fairly anything with it but we cannot, e.g. measure the abundance of certain nutrients and we're looking for something a bit more innovative, like examining the cleanness of tables at McDonald's or KFC. What do you think it might be? Thanks in advance for your ideas!

I might need some help with the following question: 1)a) 300 000 Joules of energy are stored in a patch of grass on a meadow. How many of those joules would be available to a tertiary consumer? b) According to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, the biomass stored in plants cannot all be used to feed other organisms. What percentage of the energy stored as biomass in plants is transferred, on average to the next trophic level of the food chain? Apply the 2nd law of thermodynamics to explain this.

Hi people, So I have a group 4 project whose theme is Kitchen Science. My group consists of chemists and biologists. My idea was to measure the fat, protein, carbohydrate and fiber content of several foods from our school canteen. Yet while researching, there is no way to measure the contents of fat, protein, carbohydrate and fiber using the technology of our school (it requires a bomb calorimeter and other high-end equipment not normally found in high schools). So what other ideas you guys suggest me to do (topic is Kitchen Science)? Or do you know an alternative way to measure protein, fat, carbohydrate and fiber in foods? P.S. It must be achievable in 16 hours ti…

Hi guys, so for my groups, group 4 project we have been the topic "Climate Change". Im taking this from a chemistry point of view and am in need of help in how I should go about structuring the project. What kind of research question could i come up with? does it need to be long? what do I need to include? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I know a presentation has to be done. This presentation can be done in Microsoft Powerpoint, etc. right? Or does it have to be on poster, or some sort of paper representation? And does a report have to come with either of the above?

I'm interested in hearing your crazy stories about the Group 4 Project. Did you have a group member who bailed? Uncooperative team? What you did? Anything goes really. My Group 4 experience was pretty stressful for me. I'm in HL Bio and the rest of my group consisted of 2 SL Bio kids and one Chem kid (so not much variety and NO PHYSICS because we were the last group formed). So I was essentially forced to do the physics part of it since no one else had a decent confidence in it. The chem kid is a huge creep and did hardly any work and turned it his part on the last possible day -__- We couldn't of a good topic so we did the aerodynamic comparison of birds and bats which w…

Hello! I'm a newbie here and anyway, my IB school gave us the deadline to define our Group 4 Project topic by June 13th, 2014. In early September we will be going to Višnjan in Croatia to conduct our Group 4 Project experiments. Since there's red soil in Višnjan area, my Chemistry class decided to determine the percentage of Iron (Oxide) in the soil. The problem is, if we decide on this topic, the Biology kids will have a problem since they can't investigate chlorosis (it was a topic 2 years ago) and they'll be left without a topic. We don't really know what to choose as our Topic since Višnjan is a small place which is not that close to any water bodies. I'd be very g…

Me and my group are doing a group 4 project investigating on chocolate. Are there any biological and chemistry aspects for this topic? I can only think of these, but I don't know if they work or not. Biology: Investigating on how the chemicals found in chocolate affect the human body Chemistry: Determining the fat content (Does gerber's method work?) Determining the sugar content (Benedict's test) Any advice and suggestions?

Hey all, we were assigned our group 4 project at my school, and I'm kind of confused... Rather than allowing us to select our own topic (which seems to be the norm for most other IB schools), we were assigned a topic; Phillippi Creek, the body of water that runs behind our school. What I'm stuck on is what type of topics should be drawn from this, for Biology and Chemistry. My teacher was going on about 'sub-topics' and I couldn't really figure it out...how convenient that she's been gone for the past two days since we learned about the project. If someone could break down what exactly I'm meant to do for this, it'd be greatly appreciated! We have two weeks to do the proj…

For this year's group 4 project, the focus is on field studies and we are being restricted by geography this year. SOOOO all the groups are supposed to do a project where the research and experiments can be done in a forest near my school. All of us had different ideas regarding the project but once they restricted to us only experimenting inside the forest and possibly bringing some things out to experiment in our labs, our ideas reduced to a number of 0.... We're not sure what sort of ideas to do now... I'm not asking for a research question but I am wondering if anyone knows what sort of broad ideas could be done in a forest (the forest doesn't doesn't have much wildli…

I am in a smaller IB school and my HL Biology teacher is not very well informed or helpful. What I have been told is that the Group 4 project must be individual and must have to do with biology. I am not sure, especially after looking at the posts here, how accurate this is. Please help me understand the group 4 project, as I do not know what I am supposed to do. I am also looking for topic ideas having to do with physiology or virology if anyone has any ideas, but my primary concern is understanding the group 4 project in general. My teacher gave us the assignment yesterday, due in two weeks. Please help me.

Hey guys. So I'm doing the project on energy drinks. For the biology aspect I'm going to test the effect of 3 energy drinks on the heart rate of subjects before and after exercise. I had an idea for the chem aspect but I have no idea how to carry it out. I thought that if i could somehow burn the dry ingredients of the energy drink and calculate the enthalpy changes of all 3 drinks, I could compare them and see which energy drink would release the most energy for the body. It was just a thought. But right now, I've no idea whatsoever. Some assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey, for our group 4 project we can choose our own topic, as long as it has a physics, chemistry and biology aspect to it. I've been thinking for a long time and so far haven't thought of anything doable in my school laboratory. Environmental topics, seem to have a lot in common with the 3 sciences, but i can't find anything. Any help and guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

So the theme for our group 4 this year is "If superpower were real" My group has come up with and experiment of testing Cyclops' "laser beam" eyes. We will shine a laser through cow lenses that have been treated with different chemicals and then measure the refraction of the light due to the lens. The one snag we've hit is the chemicals. We can't seem to think of any that would be interesting to try. Any suggestions would be really great! (Keep it fun!)

Hey everyone, my school is new to the IB diploma and very unorganized! My coordinator apparently does not answer the questions we ask him, he just tells us that he will take care of everything, but nothing is happening. I am doing my IB this May. Now we have done the Biology Group 4 Project. Now our Computer Science teacher told us that we have to do a Group 4 Project in Computer Science as well. Some people tell us now that we have to do only one Group 4 Project, some say that we have to do one in both subjects. Apparently I did not find anything about this in the guides or anywhere on the internet. Thanks for any help, Chris

Hello, fellow International Baccalaureate students! I need your help here please with the Group 4 project. This year, our class has been the first IB class at my school required to take IB Biology our Junior year. We also have IB Physics HL as a 6th subject at my school. We have no other IB sciences. Our teacher is new to understanding IB in general and we are receiving many conflicting and confusing statements from him. I cannot find any requirements for the Group 4 project set out by IBO. Hi. I know that there are a lot of group 4 project topics out there already, but it can't be helped. Our overall topic is the environment, and our group 4 topic is soil (but it can also include plant growth). Our group just needs a few ideas that are not only feasible (one of our earlier ideas was to grow plants in different pressures, but it would require building pressure chambers), but also have an environmental impact that relates to the desert. Thank you in advance for your help. It's much appreciated. For reference, the bio kids: -taking desert soil samples, heating one of the samples up, and then using the two samples to grow plants -testing fertilizers or somethin…

So this year's G4 project is on transportation. Since I'm only in Biology IB, then I have to do a bio G4. So my group decided to do something on diffusion (passive transport, transport of water, teacher approved of that). So we want to manipulate the colour/ wavelength of light shone upon a plant and see how it affects the rate of diffusion of water in the roots. We're going to measure the mass of the plant before and after a certain time frame. The colour of light used will be altered (6 colours of light used) with 6 plants (all the same types). We are going to shine the light on the plant in a room fairly dark so no external light can affect the plant and be shone upon …

Hey guys, I know there's a lot of threads on this topic, but rather than topics, I'm more interested in asking for help in the process of going through the G4 project. This is the first year of IB in my school, and it seems like the teachers have less of an idea than I do about how to go about it. I guess I'm asking for something along the lines of: where to start? what should the end product be? can the project be done as a group? does it have to involve all the sciences equally? Your help is appreciated

Alright guys, I need your help! Please get your Group 4 teacher (or you can do it, if you can get the information from your school) to complete the attached survey! Just PM me with the completed survey copied from Microsoft Word (or with just your answers listed with the appropriate question number), or you can just post here with your answers after you're done. Also, please include what country you live in, just so that I can say that we did include an "international" aspect to our project. I included a short message at the bottom of the survey as to its purpose, and it would be a real help. In short, it's about lunch trays at your school, and how much your school spends…

Hi guys, so our whole class came up with the umbrella topic/ main topic as water and first out group decided to have this as our RQ: To what extent can a car running on hydrogen be efficient ? So we divided our work areas as follows : Physics: The designing of the model Chemistry: We will use electrolysis for producing hydrogen Now these two will be based on experiment wherein we will literally show a model car running on hydrogen in water Biology: Talk about microbes in water that produce hydrogen ESS: Talk about how this will benefit the environment Okay, so these two will be like in presentation format with factual evidence. The problem is, there is no chance our model…
