IA moderation

Hey everyone, I recently submitted my IA and it got chosen for moderation. After the school submitted the IA, while I was going through it I realised it I used a source that I didnt cite. It was only around 5 percent of the entire IA and was only used in one paragraph. Will I lose the diploma, get a 0 or is it fine since it isnt as severe and is noticeably accidental.

Physics IA is 12 pages, all my additional graphs and tables were put in appendix and make up around 10 pages, is that marked down?

Dear all, So I'm using the Hodders: Physics for the IB Diploma- John Allum and Christopher Talbot - Second Edition textbook, but for the various "Questions to check understanding" sections I cannot find any DETAILED/WORKED SOLUTIONS for them either in on the hodder site online (they only give numerical answer to the examination style questions) and I even checked Slader for user submitted worked solutions, but they didn't have it for this textbook... in the back of the book is just the numerical answers.. Any idea where I can get the worked solutions for Version 2. Thanks in advance!

What is Nature of Science? It seems like the IB is beginning to ask more and more questions on it in the exams. Is there anything that I need to know or understand for it? I know that you can just use some common sense and logic to answer these types of questions, but is there any way to prepare?

hello, so I was trying to solve a question and failed :)... An object is launched horizontally with a velocity of 12ms-1. What is the vertical component of velocity after 2.0s? What are the coordinates of the object after 4.0s? I tried using t=v-u/a , but I have no idea where the 12ms-1 goes. help please

Hey everyone, I hate to be that person but I think I may have completely screwed myself over with the "topic" I chose. I wanted to do something that involved magnetic braking, designed a lab, did all my data collection, and just now I'm realizing I may have gotten completely unworkable data. So my question is: Is there any hope of salvaging this? And quickly? (The IA was meant to be due today but I couldn't come up with anything even after a whole weekend of work,) I based my experiment around the idea that a conductive plane will oppose the motion of a magnetic field, generating drag of some sort (as according to Lenz Law). I basically fixed a neodymium magnet …

So I am in SL physics and am working on my IA. I planned on doing an experiment involving kinematic viscosity and temperature, is it too simple to just measure the time it takes for the different temperatures of liquid to fall? I'm worried that this is too simple, but the alternative is to create a whole new experiment to measure dynamic viscosity and divide that by the density. If showing the relationship between time and temperature is not complex enough, what should I do instead?

Hello, I have a question with two scales. 1. Our teacher said that the IB Physics Paper 3, includes questions that concern lab experiments. However, I did some research and I found that it concerns the options? Can someone confirm this? Is there even a Physics paper that concerns lab experiments? It's our teacher's first year doing the IB, so I don't exactly trust her. 2. I found this site online which has past papers: https://freeexampapers.com/exam-papers/IB/Physics/Higher/2015-May/ Here, if I click on "Paper 3", it only has options E, F, G, H, I and J. Where are options A, B, C and D? Me and my class have chosen option B - Engineering. But it d…

Hi, I need help with my Physics IA topic. I was deciding on conducting my investigation on Hooke's law and springs. I was thinking of investigating the effect of the length of the spring on the spring constant. Another idea I had was investigating that if a spring with a spring constant of k was cut into four equal springs, would the spring constant of each spring be 4k. I was told by my Physics teacher that this would make a good IA if I was able to explain it correctly, however, I am still unsure. Would this be a good physics IA topic, is there anyway I could expand on the experiment, or should I look for a better investigation? Anything would help Thank…

I'm planning on investigating the relationship between the temperature of a magnet and its magnetic force, as measured by its acceleration rate through a copper tube. My greatest worry is that this subject has been investigated too many times, and is too simple. Do you think it is too simple? How could I improve upon this investigation? Thanks!

I'm a little lost on my topic and i would appreciate the help. I want to do it on collisions in american football. I thought about focusing it on the concussions that the football players suffer and do some sort of chart and analyze the results (obviously) to show some sort of pattern. I thought about tying it to the way that a play is designed and the dangers of this. I'm worried it could come off more as a Math IA instead, because by showing some sort of pattern and graph you could make a function out of it. I believe one student this something similar that was actually their Math IA originally but changed it to physics (not about collisions or american football…

I just need help deciding if my IA topic is okay or not. I want to determine the relationship between a cantilever's period and width, mass of load, and length by comparing actual experimental data to predictions given by equations involving young's modulus. Is this okay, or is it too simple?

I want an investigation/research that is simple to experiment practically (I don't have fancy equipment. My main piece of equipment is my bike), but also complex enough that I can explore "theoretically" (meaning I can well beyond introductory mechanics principles). Can anybody list some ideas? I know this is an open-minded question, but I just need ideas to get me started because coming up with an idea is excruciatingly difficult. Also, I'm writing my EE in Physics and it's due in less than 2 weeks Thanks.

I know there are tons of posts on here like this but can anyone help me like expand my IA idea? I'm in HL physics and maannnn am I bad at it but I'm pretty good at music (violin) so I had planned to do some kind of exploration on standing waves on string/ in tubes using my violin and my large set of boomwhackers, but I'm not sure what exactly I could explore to get 10 reasonable pages out of that. I was going to explore like how the distance between adjacent notes on the fingerboard gets smaller the higher you go up the fingerboard, but that's probably not 10 pages worth of info, so can you think of like any ways I could talk about standing waves, something about waves on…

Mitch here - it's been a while since I last posted, but in the past few years I've been teaching, becoming a daddy to two little girls, and I've been enjoying life as a Canadian in Denmark. You might like to know that I just made all of the theory videos from my online revision course available to you - for free. Hope they can be of help to you - I certainly had fun recording them. https://studynova.com/lecture/physics/ I went through every past exam question (starting with May 2016 of course) and kept track of what subtopics are showing up most often on Paper 1, Paper 2 and 3. For each of those very important topics, I made a video. Voila. Every topic f…

Hello all, I am a DP Physics teacher and I've decided to put a lot of my resources online. I am not generating any money from this (I have no ads and no way for people to donate). I am posting this in here because I have heard of some challenging stories that people have had with accessing content or difficult relationships with teachers. First and foremost, you teacher should be the main resource for you when going through the DP course. If you are having difficulties, you should be asking them for help. As a secondary resource you can use my web page if you would like. It has tutorial style powerpoints and related videos. I am still building in more content, b…

Hey IB fellows, I will be beginning IB the next school year(after this summer), and have learned a lot about the IB and its benefits. I will be taking the Physics course at a higher level hoping to score a 7 at it, but i wanted to take your advice as to how to prepare for it in the summer. Perhaps basic physics or basic information about certain topics, i do not know, and that's why i am asking you, former HL students to help me achieve the best score and prepare well for it in this …

Right now, our IB school is quite new. With that being said, we barely have any courses to choose from. We don't have math HL, physics HL, (two subjects I really want to take), further mathematics (which I doubt will be added anyways), economics SL or HL and there may be more which I can't recall at the moment. My question is, how can I convince the school to add some of these courses? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys so a couple of weeks ago I did a physics IA on investigating Malus' Law and I am right now in the process of writing that IA. However, I am stuck on trying to think of an interesting way to process my data as other than forming the cosine curve, I do not know what else I can investigate or explore through processing my data and making other graphs. Can anyone help me with this and give me an idea on what I could do? It can be anything with which I can use my data to show another equation etc. To give an idea on what data i have, I have the wavelength of the laser used, the distance to the photometer, the diameter of the laser light and of course the inte…

Hey everyone, this is a very generic question but how should you study for physics? My teacher really rushes through topics and I’m finding it hard to understand how to apply the theory. So far we’ve done topics 1-4 and I’ve found mechanics the hardest because we did not spend enough time on it, we also barely learnt the theory and went straight into past paper questions. Waves and thermal physics on the other hand I found quite straight forward. Is the best approach to first study the theory and take notes and then do questions? Or is there better methods Thanks

For my IA this year, I was given the topic of exploring surface area and drag. The assessment requires me to produce a graph with a meaningful gradient. I am using the drag equation to formulate my graph (where Fd = 1/2 p u^2 Cd A) and when I plot drag force against area I get the gradient as (2 Cd/ pu^2). My question is if this gradient is useful? Surely the graph implies the the drag coefficient is a constant, but surface area is changing. Any improvements and/or changes to my possible graph would be much appreciated.

I have my Physics exam tomorrow and I have a few questions in various chapters. Measurements and uncertainties: If in a calculation, I find the answer to be 500, but the numbers that I used all have 3 significant figures, would I be able to give the answer as 500? Does that have 3 significant figures? Or would the answer be 5 x 102 ? When finding the absolute uncertainty with the percentage or maximum/minimum method, what are some rules that apply here? In my notes I wrote down that if there is addition or subtraction in the original equation, then I must add the absolute uncertainties. But when there is multiplication, division or indices, then I must add …

I want to do my IA on cantilevers using a wooden ruler (I know, overdone) but I'm having trouble formulating an actual question. I already know what variables I want to change, would my research topic just be something like, "the factors that effect the period of a cantilever" or something like that? Also, is there a way for me to make this appropriate for HL? Or if I want to do HL, should I do my IA on another topic entirely?

Hello everyone, I am planning on taking the IB Physics Exam next year, the only trouble is that there is only AP physics in my school. I have already talked with my IB coordinator and we have figured out how the Internal Assessment will be graded next school year. I have some sites and channels that might be able to teach me most of the content, yet I doubt that I will be able to find all I need. Can any of you recommend me what should I do, and sites and/or videos to learn and hopefully pass the exams next year?

Why is a linear graph required for a Physics IA?

Hi everyone. I am working with string-coupled pendulums, as I am dealing with the relationship of two pendulum, I am becoming increasingly frustrated that that I have not been able to linearize anything - they are sin/cos graphs and it's just so frustrating. Why are we required to produce linear graphs? Why can't I just compare the theoretical equation for the displacement of a pendulum, with the equation obtained from graphing my results? I could compare multiple aspects to get indicators of systematic errors, random errors are just the spread from the sine wave, and as for uncertainties, I can use trigonometric identities. I am so so frustrated. DO W…

Currently, my teacher has approved of my IA idea to investigate factors that affect the lift of a model airplane / helicopter. I can change any variable of my choice. However, as I looked into the topic I realised that I could not think of an appropriate method of testing. My original plan was to place the mode onto a scale ; for a helicopter to hover, the force exerted by the rotor blade on the air must be equal to the weight of the helicopter. (Newton's Third Law). However, in order to do that I have to spin the rotors and I'm not sure how I would approach a proper method to do so consistently. Any suggestions are greatly appre…
