hi everyone I'm writing my essay on lang and lit. I chose to do it in category 1. Im wondering if the author of the book i chose needs to be in the IB list of prescribed authors, or if that is only applied to works studied in class. Thank you so much for your help Madison

Hi I'm currently in Year 11 and I'm not sure whether to take English HL Lit or Lang/Lit for IB. Right now, I get A* for my literature essays and only A/B for Language. I thought I was pretty set on Lit HL but then I heard that Lit HL is actually really hard and only the top 3% are able to get a 7 whilst Lang/Lit would much easier even though I'm not that good at Language or don't really enjoy it. I'm wondering if Lit HL would just be extra unnecessary work especially since I'm not planning to do English-related career in the future or as a college major. Some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Hello fellow IB world, I am always being told by teachers that I need to format my essays in a particular way but they say check the criteria. I am currently freshman year and I understand that I am not taking exams yet but I need to fix this problem. For example, currently I am writing an Research paper but I am unsure if my research question is good, as well as if my formatting of the essay is reasonable. For those with past experiences or know how essays should be formatted whether it be any essay, please help me! Thank you!

Is there any way to drop literature entirely? I can't stand the subject and am frustrated with how difficult it is. I personally don't see the point in the subject as it seems pretty boring and useless ( at least for me ). Of course if you enjoy the subject, I don't mean to say that the subject should disappear entirely, but rather there should be alternative options to literature. Sorry if I offended anyone and thanks in advance.

At my school we did: The Crucible by Arthur Miller(play) The Tempest by Shakespeare (play) The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez(novella/short novel) Okay so I noticed that paper 2 is split up into sections based on type of work you have studied, like theres play, poetry and then prose: novel and short story. Our teacher said we should write about all the three works we have studied. However, after looking at some of the previous past paper questions, I'm starting to think that this is going to be a bit unrealistic. I mean considering the time frame for the exam and whatnot and especially if I want to go discuss…

What is the best way to answer a 'how and why' literature question? Obviously, the how will focus more on the literature aspect and why will be more about context. Do I work on both aspects together, or separately?

I'm currently taking my first language as english in Mexico and was just now told what poetry i'll be analyzing next week for the the oral commentary. They're going to let me choose three poems from the writer Walt Whitman and then they will decide from which of those following three poems my oral commentary will be about. I'm not familiar with the work of Walt Whitman, but if someone out there is and would like to recommend me one of his poems then be my guest. Thank you.

Hello people, I have an Interactive Oral --if you don't know what it is, it's an oral presentation + leading discussion by group-- on the history of the novel "Paradise of the Blind" by Duong Thu Huong. I have got Communism part of the history, and I have a few question that I need to answer. I sort of get the answer, but I am not clear how to gather my little pieces of ideas into a clear answer, since the question covers a wide field. Questions: Where does the author allude to history (communism) in the text? How are these important to our response & understanding of the text? Are there any motifs used in the text that connect to this topic? Are there any theme…

Hi, I'm in grade 11 at the moment, and I'm doing english A: Literature SL. I really need help with writing unseen commentaries (Paper1). I've read tonnes of articles on this site and other websites as well, but I'm still confused as to how to proceed with my essay. I really want to know: (1) How much time to devote to each part (like reading, annotating, etc.)? (2) How to write a good introduction and thesis? (3) How long should an essay ideally should be? (4) What do you write in the essay? (I understand that you need to look at how the author has made use of different literary features, but what is the 'SO WHAT?' ?) And what do you do with the themes, characterizati…

OKAY so! I am doing Literature HL, and I have to do my IOP (internal oral presentation) in a couple of days. I spoke to my teacher and she said that if I want to get a 7 (I really need it!) I need to think of new original ideas on the topic. So I chose to look at Invitation by grace nichols, I already have an idea but i need some help developing it. In my analysis I spoke about how she sexualises the fat black woman and challenges the stereotypes associated with being a fat black woman. In the end I wanted to talk about how this can be seen as a political act - Was written in 1980 for context... so this was an idea that my teacher gave me and she said if I develop it w…

So i sent this topic abount my IOP to my teacher, btw i'm doing the bluest eye, I want to do my IOP on the thing from page 74. "The thing to fear was the thing that made her beautiful, and not us" The thing isn't the girls skin, it's their mind. More specifically, everyone's mind. It's just an illusion. Nothing makes anyone beautiful, it's just how people perceive it. People think it's what society says and thinks, but society isn't a person. It has no mind of its own. You know what society is driving by? People thoughts, more specifically, their perception. He then replied This is definitely a major idea in the book, but how does Morrison choose to present this idea? …

Hi all, I do Lit SL and just did my IOC today. The texts in my school are Wilfred Owen poetry and Othello, and the text I picked was Dulce et Decorum est. If you don't know what it is that is fine, but just a bit of context we did this poem extensively in class and as such I had a lot to say and ran over time, and was unable to conclude. Was stopped at 8 minutes when I was about 80% done. Does anyone know how much this will affect marks? Also, there was a part where I wanted to mention the effect of a spondee but said trochee instead. How much will this affect marks? All comments appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone read Perfume by Patrick Suskind for IB English HL? It's received mixed reviews in my class, but I absolutely love it. It's so different and creepy and brillant! I'm anxious to write about it and hope we're allowed to use this in our world literature papers. This makes me LOL: "He would be able to create a scent that was not merely human but superhuman, an angel's scent...they would love him...love him to the point of insanity...He would be the omnipotent god of scent...He who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men...his mood was not euphoric as he formed his plans to rule mankind...he asked himself why he wanted to do it at all. Hi IBSurvival! Does anyone else on here enjoy reading dystopian literature? You know, like Yevgeny Zamyatin's We, Ayn Rand's Anthem, or George Orwell's 1984? That's just to name three I've read (the first in class this year, the latter two for my EE that I'm writing). I really enjoy dystopian literature and I was just wondering if anyone else on here does. It really gives insight into what is wrong with the world, and what will happen if that doesn't change.

Ok so i have this writting task and I need help!1 Urgently!! Hi, y'all. I'm gonna be in my second year of IB and I want to spend some time over the summer to prepare for my English class. I hope to do really well in class so that my teacher will get me one more grade for my Predicted Grade (our school has given us a draft of PG grades to sort of motivate us) but I'm not sure how I should prepare to the fullest. So far I've done some research on the contextual background for the books/texts we'll be studying in the first semester. What else can I do to ensure I will be ready for group discussions as well as answering questions in class? Thanks!

So I saw a post about the most overrated books and started thinking about some underrated books. Sometimes people are very taken up by popular works like Shakespeare, which no doubt are genius, but less infamous works that are also very genius get overlooked. My first choice is the Lies of Locke Lamora, one of a long series. It does have quite some fame but I dont think it has just enough. I adore the series and it is so elaborate and thrilling. Another one is the Autobiography of Malcolm X; this is an autobiography so I dont know if I can put this under literature? You cant really judge a biography by literature terms, can you? It is however a brilliant read in ter…

So, my IOP is on Tuesday and I have almost everything done, but I'm stuck on how to write the conclusion. It's a comparative IOP (I'm comparing thematic views on death between "Only Death" and Macbeth's 'life's but a walking shadow soliloquy'). I have never done anything comparative for English before.. What am I supposed to talk about in the conclusion? My IOP is thematic based, so will talking about human nature in relation to the concept of death suffice? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
