Hey guys, So I chose the third prompt for my TOK essay (does it matter that your personal circumstances impact how seriously your knowledge is taken, I say yes it does) and I was going to use Ethics (from there go in to Sense Perception and Reason), Human Sciences (go into Philosophy and maybe some law). For my counter-claim I planned to say that no, it doesn't matter because only knowledgeable people should speak about knowledge (we go to historians as credible sources for History, I wouldn't go to my chorus teacher for a math problem or my math teacher for help singing a song). I'm not really sure how to start or format this, or how I can bring a real-life s…

Hi guys, so its been 4 months since year 2 of IB has started and we've all started on our IA first drafts and submitted our EEs and working on CAS and stuff but... our TOK teacher hasn't introduced us to the tok titles of this year, showed us how to do it and hasn't initiated any conversations about it. He's also not the best teacher so I dont rlly expect a lot of help from his side. My EE is real **** so I'm kind of relying on my tok essay to at least lift up my grades but I've heard that tok essays are rlly hard and u need to get as philosophical as u can. So are we in trouble or can we manage with just reading through some really good samples and winging it someho…

Hi! So i am super worried about my EE and the teacher at my school have already discussed some options with me. I looked at sample EE's from student of the previous year and it seems like world religion is the simplest and most straightforward one. I am not so sure what to do for it though because i don't know much about all religions and mainly know about Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. I was thinking to do a comparison of certain aspect between Hinduism and Buddhism but i can't find a lot of research papers online on it which means i don't have good references for it. If you have any ideas or suggestions on world religion EE's or just EE's in general, that would …

Hello! I'll be doing my TOK OP soon and my teachers aren't very helpful.. so I was wondering if I could show you all my brainstorm here and if you guys could deduce if it is doable? To what extent is language a reliable way of knowing in the natural sciences? My RLS is: The Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel, in 1865 presented his results in German, the language of the Austro-Hungarian Empire of which he was a citizen living in Brun now in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, his work was not noticed by the rest of the world until it was rediscovered by American researchers in the early 1900s. Much to their credit, they attributed the discovery of Mendel's La…

Can someone please explain to me the TOK presentation structure that was prepared by Tim Woods (http://www.timwoods.org/2013/09/13/how-to-structure-a-theory-of-knowledge-presentation/)? Also, please clarify some of my doubts:- 1) Should the developments be separated according to AOK's (Ex:-Development 1=Natural sciences, Development 2=Human Sciences, Development 3=History)? 2) Should the claims and counter-claims be general statements or RLS related. For example, should a claim be 'Technology is changing our way of life' (general) or 'Iphone's are changing our way of life'? 3) Should the claims and counter-claims be about two completely different situations…

Hi, I am having a lot of trouble when it comes to choosing my real life situatuion. I don´t even know how real the real life situaution has to be. Allow me to explain, my teacher told us that it has to be real, as in it can happen in real life, but that doesn´t mean it IS really happening. The more I try to explain it it gets even more confusing, what I am trying to say is that I don´t know whether the real life situation has to be an example of something that actually exists or if it can be about a situation the could hypothetically happen. Because I want my RLS to be related to memory and how memory changes with time, and how little details start to blur and also how we…

Hello World! I'm new in this forum so if I do something wrong please keep in mind that I'm still not familiar with this type of communication. My name is Jason and I'm an IB student from Germany. At the moment I am working on my TOK presentation which I need to hand in on next Wednesday. I'm still unsure with my KQ and RLS and my teacher is not willing to help me with anything. His response to almost every question: "The IB requires me to let you do the work on your own and it would be an unfair advantage to get any help from him". Hey! I'm really trying to do my Tok presentation, but I'm struggling with finding a good KQ. At first I was interested in the ethical issue that is caused by the creation of "saviour siblings" (RLS Adam Nash) , but I thought that it might be to narrow for a KQ so I tried to find something more general and I came up with this: "to what extent does our emotion influence our ethical judgement" but I was wondering if it was now not focused enough on my RLS, so too general. Let me know what you think! Also, I know that we have to do around two developments, but, do we have to come up with different knowledge questions for each development? for example, f…

I am planning to do my ToK presentation on legal punishments (or authoritative decisions not to sound cliche) with a rape case as my central RLS. The first connotation that is attached to rape cases is unethical and negative. People often tend to formulate their claims about rape cases in a way that uses only emotion as a factor in understanding a rape case. Several other factors that aid for a reasonable point of view are neglected which develops a bias and flawed decision in the community. We must incorporate factors such as the rapists socio-cultural background, the traditions they were brought up in and the lack of education they received to develop a holistic and wel…

So I've got my topic and all of the necessary parts (knowledge question, WoK, AoK, knowledge framework, etc.), but I have no idea where to start with the actual presentation structure. Do I start with the RLS and what it is? I feel like that would be too much in the content and not enough in the knowledge of the content, if that makes sense. (But on the other hand I wouldn't know where to put the RLS otherwise). How should I develop the knowledge claims? (Obviously start with claim then counterclaim, but do I start with WoK and AoK or work them into the knowledge framework and just focus on the ones I've chosen - methodology and historical development). Last question, wha…

So I'm doing my ToK presentation in a week and I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with claims and counterclaims since we were never really taught how to make them in class. My knowledge question is: How can emotion influence decisions made by society and is it more effective than reason? My AoKs are the arts and Human Sciences and WoKs are Emotion and Reason. Howdy, fellow IB kids I'm really struggling to find a RLS for my TOK presentation. I had to come up with a knowledge question really suddenly and it is "To what extent does one have the responsibility to share (substantial) personal knowledge?" My main idea for the RLS is to find a case where authorities, scientist have kept a secret from the public that could potentially be really important. Right now my only RLS idea is from the show "The 100" where they are all up on a space ship or something and an engineer finds out that the oxygen will soon run out. When he tells the president, he doesn't allow him to share the discovery to others and kills him to …

hi, So I have my TOK presentation coming up and this is what I have so far. But I am not sure how good it is and wanted someone's opinion. This is my RLS: Dr. Andrew Wakefield falsely found a correlation between MMR vaccines and the causation of autism. This influenced anti-vaxxers, as they began to believe that they were right in their reasoning for not vaccinating their children. As a consequence, from this the measles broke out again in the US. I'm a non-IB student who somehow ended up in TOK for my last year, and now we're starting our TOK essays and presentations. Im pretty awful at think up KQ's and other topics but my interest recently piqued when our teacher gave an example of a presentation that used the RLS of men choosing certain urinals, or one in which a student question whether or not mayonnaise really is an instrument. With those in mind, I'm not excited to write a paper and talk ad nauseam for something as silly and asinine such as that, and I think it'll be reliving as most everyone else I know is doing more "serious" topics. I didn't know where to put this question but it's for my TOK essay so I thought this would be the most appropriate. I need to cite my psychology IA for my TOK essay as it is one of my RLS for the TOK essay but I also know that the IB requires everything to be anonymised. I'm unsure of what I'm supposed to put into the in-text citation and the complete citation in the works cited page. I don't want to be flagged for plagiarism but I also don't want to go against any of the rules of the IB regarding anonymity. Does anyone know how to cite myself without using my name in neither the text nor the works cited page? My ib coordinator doesn't have the answer to this.

Hi, for the TOK May 2019 essays, I chose title 2 which is “The production of knowledge is always a collaborative task and never solely a product of the individual” I came up with 3 KQ but I don't know which one to choose Does the production of knowledge always depend on the framework of shared knowledge and never solely on personal knowledge? How does the production of knowledge always rely on shared knowledge and never on personal knowledge? To what extent is shared knowledge and personal knowledge closely linked in terms of production of knowledge? The conclusion I am aiming for is that Both depend on each other to produce knowledge.
