Hey guys, so I am using Photoshop to measure some things for my extended essay with the ruler tool. However, I have been trying to think how to get the uncertainty of the tool as I need it to make the calculations and analyze the data. I have sent an email to my supervisor yet he has not responded me and even searched on the internet hoping that I would get some kind of idea or guide that would help me figure it out.... but nothing, and I have my draft due in a week! I hope any of you guys know anything about this! and if not, thanks anyways! ^^

i know this is stupid but is ive been considering this for a long time and i need to decide asap. I'm taking bio at SL. I intend to do accounting and finance or economics in the future. i noticed most of them liked science that show mathematical aptitude (?) and bio requires a lot of memorizing and no calculations at all, especially at SL. During GCSE, my best subject was physics. So i thought maybe by taking physics SL i will do better? I tried my best at bio SL but always ended up at 6 only.. Altho it may 'sound' like a good choice, but im already in IB2. Ill try my best to juggle my time properly. but im worried about the lab reports. are there plenty? I'm just afraid…

Hey Guys, I was just looking at my Physics and Chemistry Syllabus Guides, and have realised that they were published in 2007 and are suitable for "First Examinations 2009". I am in my first year of IB, with exams in November 2014 and was told that we are studying the new course, from which the first batch of students are going to be doing their exams this November. I am pretty sure that indicates that my guide booklets are outdated. Does anyone know if the syllabus has changed for subjects other than just Maths and English? And where can I get new guide books from, because these are the only ones I have gotten from our school. Thank you!

I am starting the IB next year, and need som help to decide which subjects I should choose. Currently I have decided som of them: HL: Economics Spanish B SL: Norwegian A1 Mathematical Studies I'm from Norway, and are pretty sure that I want to study Economics at UNI. I want to apply for a uni here in Norway, which explains why I have chosen Norwegian and Economics. Math isn't my strongest subject, and since the uni I want to get into doesn't require more than Math Studies, I decided to stick with it as I really have potential to score a 7. I have chosen Spanish for no other reason thatI really enjoy it. Most students at my shool tends to take English A1 …

I have just finished my sophomore year. I'm enroll long into IB Diploma. My question is the following: are you able to take three science IBs? My school says its ok and I've chosen three sciences already: (Biology, Physics and Chemistry). But is it REALLY ok? I mean is it within the IB regulations? I've looked all over the Internet for an answer; but there's A LOT of controversy on the subject. Please help me

Hey, guys. I'm taking math, biology and chemistry HL right now. I hesitated a lot these days about whether I should drop biology HL. I realized that there are tons of stuff to remember in bio and chem HL. I am not going to an 8-year medical school and be a doctor afterwards. I will major in engineering, probably chemistry, biochemistry or computer engineering. what's your opinion about this? Should I take biology HL only because I like it and I want to be challenged? (I will not drop math or chemistry to SL for sure.) Thank you.

Is it impossible to achieve a 6 or 7 in Biology and Chemistry HL? I am considering to take them both, but not sure if I can manage to take them at HL. I enjoy science, but not sure if two science would be a killer and if I will be able to get top marks in them, and especially at HL.

I posted this under science because I feel it relates more to chemistry. I started IB in January and have been taking Lang Lit, Chem and Math HL and Theatre, business and Chinese B SL. I kinda feel really lost in chemistry classes now and I don't understand clearly what my teacher is going through. When I go home to study for chemistry tests, I get more and more confused. I keep telling myself it will get better but I'm just unsure now. Should I change my chemistry to SL and theatre to HL? How diff in chem SL and HL as compared to theatre SL and HL? Help?! I hope to decide by June. P.s. I am scholar so I'm also thinking about how the school will see me if I change my HLs …

Okay so I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm doing the IB diploma next year and I've decided to do 2 sciences since Im interested in possibly going to UK unis. So I took IB Chemistry HL and IB Biology HL. So here's the problem, I can do both sciences in year 1, but not in year 2. My coordinator said that taking both sciences might not happen since both of the sciences are during the same hour and there might not be enough students signed up for it. Should I stick to 2 sciences or take IB psychology as a 6th subject ? Oh and I'm new to this site.

Hello! So, I have Bio and Chem at HL and Physics at SL (all three sciences are required for medicine in India). Since summer is coming up, I want to get started on my IA final drafts... but the problem is, we haven't done a single Biology one yet! We've done the experiments, but each lab report is ONLY 200 words... My teacher is HORRIBLE, so I really want to know what exactly I can do to improve my Biology IAs. Can I have an example one? I have no one to help me, my school is very, VERY small. Also, I would like to know how I can improve my Chem HL and Physics SL IAs. how would I go about improving them and is it possible to finish all of them before September of this y…

Hi guys!!! I am currently a sophmore and course registration for my junior year is coming up soon. I really want to take chemistry and biology since i want to be a Pharmacist, however, i don't know if i can handle it.... The only other option would be to take Philosophy. Philosophy does seem easier, however, i am so afraid that once i graduate i will regret not getting the exposure to two sciences that i could have. Also, chemistry is a little bit challenging for me. I have been making B's this entire year in that class which concerns me but i am hoping to make an A this last quater. The thing is- I like it, it's just that the tests are challenging. However, I am willin…

Hi, I'm taking HL Chemistry and this is my first year. I picked my topic to be "How does the pH value of an acid/base affect the rate of reaction". The problem is, I don't really know what to base my experiment on. For example, How will I really conduct this lab? I just have no idea how to start this thing out, any ideas are really appreciated! I was thinking the lab would be divided into 2 sections: 1st Section: The control will be a base in a beaker (NaOH) and I will titrate 3 different acids (of strength weak, medium, strong) at same concentration into the beaker and measure the rate of reaction 2nd Section: The control will be an acid in the beaker (HCl) and I will ti…

I have this draft design due soon for a physics IA, I have been given my topic which is factors affecting how a paper helicopter falls to the ground and have come up with my aim, variables etc. Problem is I don't know what to include in the design. I have been told doing a hypothesis is not necessary and so far have put Aim, Variables and how to control the variables but don't know if that is all the design consists of, any helpful advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Which one should I take for senior year? I don't need Chem HL for my HLs (already have English, History, and Business), but I'm intrigued by the class but am worried by the workload. I'm planning to go into business...so Chem SL, HL, or Environmental Systems SL? How hard is each? How is the workload? Thanks

Right now I'm procrastinating/getting angry at my Physics CE. I'm particularly wondering whether anyone else finds doing D/DCP/CE just as useless as I'm finding it. Frankly, a lot of the work we've been doing for DCP/CE seems pedantic. I don't particularly see how formatting our analysis of errors is particularly relavent, or even scientifically enriching. Ditto with significant figures, though I appreciate how they might be useful. Perhaps it is just the way I am being exposed to it, but I do not feel that writing these reports is in any way teaching my skills that will help if I were ever tempted to design or conduct a useful, mildly original experiment. Writing reports…

I'm a junior in IB, taking Biology. A few weeks ago the science teachers at my school "explained" the Group 4 project to our class. While I think I understand the general premise, they were so vague that I am having a really hard time coming up with an idea. Our "task" is to solve a problem with our school's physical facilities. I had thought of creating a roof garden to reduce heating/cooling costs; Bio students could investigate which plants would be most appropriate, and Physics kids could look at the insulation effects. We only have those two subjects in our group. There have been concerns that this is unfeasible; if anyone could help suggest another topic or …

Hey nerds I'm doing physics sl since September and I'm starting to get a bit worried about my teacher's methods. He does not do anything that is not included in the textbook (the Tsokos one). This means, we do not get any additional examples nor exercises. In fact, the whole lesson is about translating what's written in the book and/or doing homework in class (ridiculous!). Because of that, I would like to ask you for some advice. I am considering switching to biology sl, but I'm afraid I would never catch up - it's three moths since the school year has started. Moreover, is biology really easier than physics? I have no problems understanding physics (I get mostly 6s and…

For my EE in physics, I need to fill a 1 meter tube of diameter 10cm with air, CO2 and methane, and then hermetically seal it. The tube will have glass on either end for light to pass through. The first two gases are relatively easy to handle. For air I just close the open end (the other side is already sealed tight) and for CO2 I lower a tube to the bottom, open the gas valve and continue letting it flow until the match (which I place at the opening) is extinguished and then another 1 second for good measure. (By the way, can someone tell me if this method results in a mixture of air and CO2 in tube or just CO2) For these two the only small problem I have is that I don't…

How many percentages is final exam, how many percentages is IA (lab reports), how many percentages is manipulative skills (G4 project)? Does it work so that if your final exam grade is rounded up to 6, IA to 5, G4 to 5 (however many percents is each of final grade) then you will multiply each by the factor by which it is emphasized? For example final exam grade of 6 is multiplied by 0.70 if it's 70% resulting in 4.2 and to this IA and G4 are added accordingly for example 5*0.1 and 5*0.1 and added to get a final grade of 4.2+0.5+0.5 ~ 5.2 *rounded down to 5* = 5 ? Or does it more accurate work by using the percentage of maximum points for each assessment type and then ulti…

Buying Textbooks

Hiii!! I need help deciding if I should buy textbooks or not. I'm in Biology HL and Chemistry SL and we're using books from Pearson. I've heard good things about Pearson, for example, its very detailed in explanations but I've also heard that the study guides and course companions are also good in terms of exam revision because they're more concise and answer the assessment statements. Thus, I'm unsure if the Pearson textbooks are enough :T And if I do decide to buy extra books which one should I get? The study guide or course companion? Also, is buying these textbooks a good investment for university? in terms of, is the material generally the same and can i still use t…

Hey guys, I'm confused about the average mark that people get on labs. My friends and I last semester would always get around 8-9 marks out of 12. Is that good? If you want more details about where I lost the marks, I don't remember and the school keeps them under file.

I'm concerned that my teacher is telling us too much for a lab report. On a lab he's assessing for design, he gave us instructions that were incredibly detailed, and when I asked him what we, the students, were designing, he said we had to figure out things such as "how many grams of NaOH go into your solution to make it 0.1 M." (For those of you not in chemistry, this is a basic calculation. This would be like a physics lab when the only designing you do is "calculating the time it takes for an object to fall from 2 meters without air resistance" when the entire lab is about determining how much air resistance affected an object on the way to the ground with your teache…

So in a couple of weeks i'll be going back to school and i'm going into the 11th grade. This goes out to anybody who can't decide whether they wanna take Chemistry or Physics for their Group 4 subject. And in my case, HL. For those who have already gone through IB or are half way through it, or have decided their subjects already, i just want to know a couple of things that might help me in choosing: 1. What made you pick Physics/Chemistry? 2. If you've already gone through at least a year of Chemistry/Physics HL.... would you say it's really hard? And what are the sorts of things you are asked to do for projects? Or in class...? I'm actually really interested in the…

This is for a bio lab. But anyway, How would one calculate an uncertainty for light intensity. I am using the formula WATTS/4π(0.1)^2. Where 0.1 is the distance of the light from the object which i measured with a ruler and than converted to meters. So wouldn't my uncertainty for my ruler be +/- 0.5cm but what would my uncertainty for my WATTS light bulb be and for my light intensity in total??? I am really confused, any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys! How's IB Prep going? What I'd Like to know is what way to covering the entirety of our fat IB text books that you are going to utilize before the final exams. i have just completed one of my experiments for my ESS IAs, and it appears that this experiment was a flop. i.e. my hypothesis turned out to be wrong (when i'm pretty sure that it should have been correct. ) in regards to IAs, if the experiment you do fails, does that effect the mark you will get for your IA, or is it irrelevant, as long as long as the process and results are well presented and a clear discussion is given? thanks!

For instance, should we have to figure out ourselves what to measure, or should the instructions be really clear and step-by-step? Because we just did a Bio lab about enzyme activity and we were only told to add H2O2 to different organic substances and then to observe what happens without any clear instructions on what to measure. It just seemed a bit unfair, as, after all, the method would have been assessed for what we would have measured and how.

Hey! So you all probably know about the requirement for laboratories. We all need to have 40 hours. But does IB check the unassesed labs? I am asking because I had some laboratories which I did but I did not write the lab reports on. I dont remember them at all, so I dont really feel like writing them. HL: Computer Science, Business & Management, English Lit Lang, Phys/Bio SL: Math, Mandarin B University I 'aspire' to be in, is MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), (I don't believe that I need a HL in math, I've got quite a history with computers so far (8 year old programmer), and a lot of passion, certificates, and projects to back it up.
