So for one of the main two sources I plan on using for Part A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources, I chose a letter which is cited in a textbook. I've tried to find the exact location of that letter and whether it's available online but I can't seem to find anything and chances are it's not available since it's from years ago and I don't have access to any sort of archives like that. Would it still be okay if I cited the primary source which is on the textbook instead of the primary source itself? Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Hey people! I'm only in the first year of IB, but our History teacher is making us do our IAs at the end of this term, so that it'll be one less IA next year. But, I can't seem to find any sample IAs that are for the new syllabus and my teacher only gave us old ones too... Does anyone know where I could find one? The content doesn't really matter, I just don't have a clue how to format it, like visually so it would be nice to see what one looks like. Thanks for the help

Hi guys! I'm currently writing my IA about the extent to which the Boxer Rebellion could be attributed to the fall of the Qing Dynasty, and I'm struggling to find secondary sources which talk about the historical implications of the Boxer Rebellion. Most books which I've come across only seem to discuss the military tactics and strategies used by the Western powers. Do you guys know of any resources which could lead me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hey, so I'm in Pre-IB and we have our HI due soon. My topic is "How were women of Canada affected by WW1?". Do you think this is a good topic that I can get a lot of information on? Or has anyone here something similar and have any information that might be useful? And what are some tips for writing this HI? Thanks

Hello, I've had quite a few problems with narrowing down my History HL IA question on the Tiananmen Square protest and the Singing Revolution. This is what I've got as of now; "How did the public views of communism and the communist rule influence the intentions behind the Tiananmen Square protest compared to the Singing Revolution?". I want it to be focused on the fact that in China they mourned a communist leader whilst in the Balkan states they were rebelling against the communist rule but as said my research question is a bit too big so a bit of help would really be appreciated:) cheers!

I'm writing my extended essay in the subject area of history, and my RQ is "To what extent did Operation Paperclip by the United States and Operation Osoaviakhim by the Soviet Union influence the work of the Space Race?". Hey friends, Yesterday I did my first ever Paper 3 question and I think I kind of messed up? This will be used as my predicted grade which will be sent off on my uni applications hence I am feeling a little anxious. As the time allocated for our exam wasn't enough, we only had to choose one question amongst two and write one essay. The question I chose read "Analyse the reasons and the results of one military intervention from 1960-80". I chose to wrote about Pinochet as I was sure that he came to power in 1973 in a coup d'eat. Below is the outline of my essay: Introduction: 11th September 1973- Pinochet led a military coup and seized power. Main reason …

For my IA I am planning to analyse one primary source in "identification and evaluation of sources" section. I'm now confused with definition of the primary source. The source I want to use is a work based on letters of person at the time and has many citations in it. I understand that its Technically a secondary source but maybe I can just quote the person and use it as primary source in my analysis. To sum up, can you take primary sources, quoted letter in my case, out of secondary ones and analyse it as a primary source in OPVL

Hey, for my Extended Essay for History I want to write a comparative essay on Lenin and Stalin and the extent to which they followed Marxist ideology. Is this considered "trivial nature"? Also, how would I frame my question. I also want to utilise case studies from Hitler/Mussolini's reign to demonstrate that a lot of their policies were similar or even the same as Stalin/Lenin's. Some ideas I had were. How successful were both Lenin and Stalin in following Marxist Ideology? To what extent were both Lenin and Stalin implement Marxist ideology after the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917?

Guys, I was practicing the answer to the classical question of the causes that led to the outbreak of WW1 (examine the role of colonialism rivalry that led to the outbreak of WW1), and lacked some specific examples of historians from each current (revisionist, marxist, and those who blame the politicians and ministers for incompetence). The historiography only includes historians, right? We cannot include, for example, Lenin or Lloyd George? My teacher didn't really develop this and I am essentially for the first time looking at this to answer questions in History. Could you help me out in explaining how I can use historiography to achieve top marks in my essays…

I am in my first year of the Diploma Program and I have to decide on a topic & question for the history IA. I have a family member who grew up in South Georgia (born in 41) as a twin. Her mother died from appendicitis and her father was very restrictive. She had to wear dresses and work in the fields and never experienced the classic rock n' roll teenage thing that we associated the 50's and 60's with. With her as my primary source, I could talk about feminism or medical stuff (twin studies, the death of her mother) or I could talk about the tension between white and black people during the time. I have no clue how to structure a good question, any ad…

I am in desperate need of help. I have my IA proposal question due soon and I have a difficult time wording my topic. It has to be argumentative which is my struggle. My topic is the Bonus Army during 1932. It was when Veterans of WWI wanted their bonus and Hoover wouldn't give it to them. Instead he sent the army which killed and injured many of them with Tear Gas and Guns. If anyone has any idea please don't hesitate to comment!!

Hello! I just wanted quick help with my IA question, I have two ideas and I am unsure about both of them. I'm writing it on the French Revolution btw. To what extent did the execution of King Louis XVI cause/influence the reign of terror? Or To what extent did Maximilian Robespierre influence the French Revolution? I think the second one is too broad and the first one is too narrow, but I am certainly open to ideas!

Hello, Are the examiners going to be more impressed when they are looking at an essay with a balanced argument for both sides, or when they are looking at an essay that has a thesis/clear argument and tries to justify this throughout the essay?

Hello fellow IB students. For my history IA I wanted to do something related to the Soviet Union (particularly during Stalin's reign). After a lot of time I came up with the question " "To what extent was the battle for Stalingrad the main turning point in the eastern front?". My History teacher likes my question but i'm not sure about if it's a good question, mainly because it seems broad. It seems like a lot to cover in only 2000 words as I have to take in account the battle of Stalingrad along with various other important events related to the Eastern front. I would like to hear some opinions from other people about my History IA question.

Hey Everyone, I am new on this site so idk how it works exactly, but basically my history teacher told me that it is time for me to start thinking about my IA topic. Since I have been reading a non-fiction book about Noel Field, a Stalinist American spy, which really grabbed my attention I though maybe I could do my IA on him, or some sort of Soviet espionage. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Eszter

Hey guys, I have been kinda exasperated and anxious with my History HL exam now in may: more than being a very demanding subject, it has a less padronised program and so can be considered to be harder to get top marks. Don't wanna seem kinda sponger but if you could give a few tips, talk about your situation with the subject, discuss the subject itself and, if you may, attach some notes or practicing answers to past papers (this was actually something not only I but also more people could benefit from, because for every subject you must have an effective writing, which enables you to get top marks). To get ambitious grades in this rigorous subject, we must intertwine…

Hey everyone, (I didn't know whether to post this on the EE thread or this one) So I'm doing my EE on History and I want to investigate 20th-century cult movements. I want to focus on Jim Jones's cult, People's Temple, which has been all over the media after the Jonestown mass suicide. However, I wonder if doing my extended essay on the rise and failure of only one religious cult would be acceptable. I'm pretty sure I can find enough to write, but do you think I should focus on 20th century cult movements in general instead? Thanks a lot

So I am looking at past questions for History (I take HL). In general, I'm super confused about how to structure an essay. My teacher says to incorporate historical perspectives, but what exactly does 'historical perspective' include, and how do I put them in my essay? I found other forums on this but they're based on the old history syllabus, which puts a lot more emphasis on using historian's names and their school of thought. Are there any general structures I could follow for my essays? For example, I'm looking at the question: Assess the importance of the use of force and economic policies in the establishment and maintenance of power of one authoritarian or sin…

Hi guys, Please help me, I need help with my history IA topic: I cannot decide which question to do. However, I am leaning towards the origin topic question, but it is not "IB worded," and I cannot think of a way to make it IB. I think these questions are sufficient, but I really do not know. Lately, most of my history homework consists of reading and solving exercises in the Rogers and Thomas The Move To Global War textbook. So, it's pretty much just thorough preparations for paper 1. However, there is one thing I'm wondering... How long should or responses to these questions be? I understand that only the last question is an essay one, but still if there is a First Question Part B on a comic, I quite often end up writing only one sentence like "In this comic, A is shown doing B - through this and this - and this means that X is Y - which is illustrated through this and this."
